Tuesday, 12th November started cold and the first frosts of winter had arrived. Despite the early arrival of the cold snap, Ashridge Executive Education was a welcoming location for the MRK Associates ninth Leadership seminar and the delegates for our event arrived to enjoy another informative event.
The topic of this seminar was the incoming IR35 regulations for private enterprises and how they were going to be implemented in April 2020. This follows the successful implementation of the same legislation to the public sector in 2017. After such a successful implementation in governmental and regional departments, it was only a matter of time before this came to private sector businesses.
Our keynote speaker for this event was Sam Cox, a Director at Qdos Contractor. He presented a wide-ranging overview and discussed the changes and the planning that should be applied when a private sector hirer was seeking an interim, from April 2020. The questions at the end offered unique insight to individual business’ differing understanding of the incoming regulations and how it applied to them.
Are private sector organisations ready for IR35 implementation in April 2020? These are legislative requirements that most businesses – there are a few exceptions* – need to adhere to when hiring contractors. As a business leader/executive, do make sure you’re across the legislation.
The business Sam represented, Qdos Contractor, is the UK’s largest integrated provider of services to contractors. Founded initially as a tax consultancy for small businesses, they established their specialism in IR35 when the legislation was introduced, and they have focused on helping contractors ever since. Qdos provides extensive insight, expertise, and knowledge of contractor issues, with special regard to the IR35 legislation.
Appointing interim/contractors and the application of off-payroll law goes hand-in-hand. Aidan Murray, Business Director from MRK Associates, provided an incisive overview to the recruitment market from MRK’s point of view, which had a particular focus on the increase in roles they’ve seen in the last 12 months across the industry, but the lack of active candidates seeking to move on during an uncertain market, making it more important to engage with passive jobseekers. Naturally, Brexit and IR35 were touched upon too!
If you were at the event, we hope you received all the information you needed, and Sam answered the questions you had. Naturally, if you have more questions, please call Qdos directly. After the event, we distributed the slides from both Qdos and MRK so if you haven’t received these, please do call me on 01442 894555.
