Are you thinking of a job move in 2019? With Christmas looming fast on the horizon, the pause from breakneck work requirements could assist you to get ahead, ready to hit the ground running on 2nd January when many professionals head back to work.
In this article, we share our experience to help you use this holiday time to your advantage. We’re not saying you have to open the laptop on Christmas or Boxing Day. Spending time with the family is good for the soul and you’ll want time to savour those brussels sprouts that have been prepared since November.
These items will help you prepare for the career direction to take in the New Year:
- Make a plan
As you would for a project, department or business, you need a personal plan. It’s always good to review the previous 12 months’ successes and also critically analyse where improvements can be made. Be positive when considering the latter – don’t be hard on yourself. What’s happened in the past is exactly that, but you can learn – and you should.
Download either the latest Finance or Revenue Management Market Insights and Salary Surveys and brush up on what you should be earning. Also, read through the many advice articles to further understand trends in industry.
Identify businesses you’d like to work for and recognise recruiters who can help you achieve your goals; if you are looking for a role in finance, accountancy, office support or revenue management, make sure you get in touch with MRK Associates. Apply some blue-sky thinking; be ambitious about where you want to go. Have belief!
One last piece of advice in this segment; don’t leave this plan lying around at your current workplace!
- Freshen up your CV
Look at your CV, and perhaps ask friends from different industry backgrounds to do this too with a view to getting a different perspective. Apply recent successes and project deliverables. It’s also wise to develop a different CV for the various roles you are applying for, i.e. keep the central structure of the CV the same but tailor some of the achievements or bullet points to match the key points of the job you are applying for.

- Socially – are you sharp enough?
It’s wise to update your LinkedIn profile to be attractive when you start networking; just like you have with your CV.
