As a highly regarded and widely renowned economist, Tim spent his entire career working as a professional macro-economist, studying most aspects of the UK economy. Through his many years’ experience, he split his time principally between The Treasury and the Bank of England. To add balance and objectivity to his knowledge, there were also short periods within the private sector.
Tim’s career started at The Treasury in 1986 when Nigel Lawson was Chancellor of the Exchequer. You’ll remember Rt Hon Mr Lawson implemented monetary targets followed by a targeted exchange rate policy against the Deutschmark. Neither fiscal focus was successful, hence the subsequent switch to inflation targeting.
Mr Pike retired in the Summer of 2018 after an illustrious career. However, in the preceding 12 years, he spent his time working in the BoE’s Agency Division, where he liaised with the business community of East Anglia so that the BoE could better understand economic trends. The results of that interaction can be found in published research articles on the website, Bank Underground. These include articles on Artificial Intelligence, e-commerce and the causes of low UK productivity.
The UK economy is under renewed interest due, in part, to the Brexit deal that will be struck. In recent years, fiscally, the UK has been on a steady, yet upward trajectory.
What insights can Tim point to?
What does the future hold?
Are we ready for Brexit?
