After an interesting and conflicting set of Christmas results from many retailers, how is future consumer spending looking ?
An article by the BBC shows conflict in the performance of companies on the same high streets and in the same sectors, with some companies showing excellent year on year growth and others not so.
Unsurprisingly, one of the clear winners was the online shopping fraternity with many people deciding to stay in and avoid the cold weather (e.g. Marks and Spencer’s online sales up 25% yr on yr).
It seems consumers weren’t too worried about spending though, even with the challenges that many people will face with the austerity measures this year. This must be a good sign for the economy. If people keep spending, retailers need more stock, manufacturers need to produce more and more jobs created all round!! Fingers crossed.
However for some of the companies, the Christmas figures aren’t so rosy when compared to their direct competitors. Work to do for some of them!
