How to resign from your job

This is probably the hardest and most nerve wracking part of the whole process. You are likely to feel scared about the future and guilty for leaving your current employer.
Remember: You wouldn’t have been looking for work if everything had been perfect.

Don’t resign until you receive your new job offer in writing from the company itself.

Keep your letter of resignation short and to the point. There is no point writing an insulting letter even if you have been unhappy with the way you have been treated - this could only result in you receiving a bad reference. You are leaving so there is no point being bitter.

This letter should be addressed to your immediate line manager and presented in person to them.
Details should include a brief introduction saying you have enjoyed your time at your current workplace but feel now is the right time to move on as you are needing a new challenge. Thank them for the time and support they have given you over the time you worked there.
State the notice period that you will work (this needs to be the notice period in your contract) and agree the exact finish date with them. Should you wish to work a shorter notice period, discuss this with them here as they will appreciate the openness you have shown and will be more likely to grant it.

Telling your boss you are leaving is a daunting experience but remain calm and remember your original reasons for leaving. Don’t forget you are bound to be nervous as you will be leaving your ‘comfort zone’ and heading into pastures new.

Counter-Offers

Be prepared for your current employer to try to persuade you to stay often by offering you more money, a new role or various other promises!
Remember: It costs an employer a lot of time and money to recruit someone new and it is cheaper for them to give you more money to stay.
You need to ask yourself – Why did they not do this before I handed in my notice?

At this point it is essential for you to remember your reasons for looking for a new job in the first place. Over 70% of individuals who have accepted a counter-offer are looking for work again within three months.
